Thomas Paine (1737-1809) born on this site, is Thetford's most famous
son. A pioneer of real democracy, he was involved with both the American
and French Revolutions. His book, The Rights of Man, is justly famous.
Some of Paine's writings formed part of the American Constitution.
Thetford is an ideal base for short breaks. Its past can be seen in Iron
Age and Norman remains and an excellent local museum. Nearby Thetford
Forest Park has many wooded walks.
Norwich and the popular Norfolk Broads are nearby.
